Book Review-Where the Crawdads Sing By Delia Owens
#qotd-what makes a book a 5 star -the plot or the prose?
A full 5 stars to this book ..A complete delight for readers ..Vivid imagery ,evocative almost poetic prose and an absorbing storyline ..I reread the book ,just to go over some of the beautiful lines written in the book ..This is a story about Kya ,”The Marsh Girl”, who lives alone in the marsh ,along the coast of North Carolina .Abandoned by everyone ,Kya refuses to be subdued and finds refuge in the marsh ,until the marsh permeates every fibre of her being .. Kya knows the marsh just as well as she knows herself. Throbbing with life ,the marshlands accept Kya as one of her own ..
“She knew the years of isolation had altered her behavior until she was different from others, but it wasn’t her fault she’d been alone. Most of what she knew, she’d learned from the wild. Nature had nurtured, tutored and protected her when no one else would”
And like nature, She finds her way through her meanderings ..
“but whenever she stumbled, it was the land who caught her. Until at last, at some unclaimed moment, the heart-pain seeped away like water into sand. Still there, but deep. Kya laid her hand upon the breathing, wet earth, and the marsh became her mother”
Exemplary detailing of ecology and rich characterization are what sets this book apart .I smelt the salty sea ,squelched mud between my toes ,saw the gulls waiting to be fed, the mussels buried in the sand through the imagery the author created .The treacherous marshlands come alive in her writing. After a long time ,I read prose that was so beautiful ,that I could forgive the writer for anything . Some of the lines are so profound ,that I have read them over and over again ..And yet ,I can read them some more…
“Autumn leaves don’t fall, they fly. They take their time and wander on this their only chance to soar.”
“I wasn’t aware that words could hold so much. I didn’t know a sentence could be so full.”
“Why should the injured, the still bleeding, bear the onus of forgiveness?”
“Sand keeps secrets better than mud.”
Abandonment ,Prejudice ,Abuse and Loneliness are the main themes in this book .There is also drama and suspense which add the mystery elements and make the plot interesting …
Magnificent Writing and masterful character development make this one of the best reads of this year ..Highly recommend …
