Book Review-The Kite Runner

The Kite runner is a heart breaking story of strife ,of betrayal ,of redemption ..It stayed with me for a long ,long time after I finished the book ,leaving my heart so weighed down for the wasted lives that I was unable to pick up another book for a long time .Khaled Huseeini is a magnificent storyteller .The book though is fiction does draw heavily from his own experiences.. Weaving many stories into one ,this is a roadmap of intricate relationships .Relationship between a boy and a father ,between a master and his servant and between 2 boys separated by class and status ..This is the coming of age of a boy into a man .

The main characters are Amir ,Baba  and Hassan. Amir who comes from privilege by way of birth and class, Baba ,Amir’s father ,a picture of Pashtu feudal aristocrat , and Hassan a disadvantaged Hazra..The upheavals in the Afghan political landscape cause such tumultuous ,irreversible changes in the lives and the land they all held dear..

The author has built a wonderous image of Afghanistan ,with its blue skies ,teeming with kites ,with its fabled markets of dry fruits and pomegranates, its picturesque streets and of course ,of its proud people and culture.Beautifully written ,with so much emotion in every line ,its difficult to read this without  a dry eye .You feel the pain ,the injustice …Its like  your heart is being torn from within you .

“When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal a wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness. There is no act more wretched than stealing.”

I have read this so many times now ,that my copy is in tatters . It also draws attention to the fate of children and to racial minorities ,who are the most vulnerable and preyed upon in situations of war and strife .And for that reason ,this book is a very relevant read in the current times ..

“There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood.”
